San Diego Comic Con 2017: July 20-24, 2017
Who could imagine that the world-famous Comic Con behemoth that hosts over 130,000 attendees started out as a small, 100-attendee convention back in 1970?
Back then it was called San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Con and included two guests: science fiction writer and editor, Forrest J. Ackerman, and artist for the Walt Disney Company, Mike Royer.
Comic Con in a Nutshell
Now San Diego Comic Con practically takes over the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter with so many attendees, events, and even satellite events that the convention center and the surrounding areas transform into a campus of geek-culture enthusiasts.
It’s grown so popular, even celebrities like Daniel Radcliffe, Peter Jackson, and Maisie Williams attend as guests in the crowd, hiding their identities behind superhero masks and other cosplay. Famously, Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad once donned a Walter White mask.
So what’s the big deal? Comic Con is where comic book and movie creators talk about their upcoming and past projects with fans. This is where they announce new trailers for the very first time, and interact with the fans. Even geek culturists who don’t attend Comic Con review the highlights and check out the panels afterwards online to get the weekend scoop.
